Commonly referred to as “Devil’s Nettle,” yarrow plants have been used for centuries as an “allheal” by medics, soldiers and tincture enthusiasts to stop bleeding, aid in digestion and even help stomach and menstrual cramps. So, it’s no surprise yarrow is associated with healing, balance, strength and immortality. In fact, Achilles was dipped into a vat of yarrow tea to gain his strength (by his heel, though, and we all know how that worked out.) Although yarrow is used for a lot of good, its duality also comes in the form of legend. It was often said that if the Devil visited your town, he would be carrying a bouquet of his own nettle and shake it at the houses he wished to curse. In traditional tattoo art, yarrow makes frequent appearances, as do various forms of hands, which often symbolize protection and power. As with all things, there are two sides to this tale.
